A Certain Idea Of France

The life of Charles de Gaulle

By Julian Jackson

It’s been a fascinating read and taught me much about 20th century French history, especially the second world war and the Algerian war, about which I knew little or nothing. De Gaulle himself is an extraordinary character, both infuriating and obnoxious, but at the same time a political genius, who, like Churchill, clearly saw the nature of Nazi Germany and later the cold war Soviet Union. Very glad I read it and I’m now quite eager to learn more about French history.
