His diaries of the Brexit years 2016 to 2020, during which he was a foreign office minister, first under Boris Johnson and then later Jeremy Hunt. It’s a wonderful, catty, gossipy, day-by-day account of the absolute chaos and disorder of the Brexit period, and how the Conservative party was taken over by swivel-eyed Brexiteer nutters. Duncan’s exasperation seeps from every page. It’s also amazing how busy a foreign office minister is and the number of relationships and issues he had to juggle on a day by day basis. The amount of travel and lack of sleep is quite scary for a man a couple of years older than me. Quite haunting on how the last entry of the Diary is January 31st 2020, the day we left the EU. The last sentence was: “Two cases of coronavirus have been reported in the UK.”
