Wild Tales

A Rock & Roll Life

By Graham Nash

I haven’t finished reading Graham Nash’s autobiography, Wild Tales, but I’ve got to the 1980’s, he’s settled down in Hawaii with the woman of his dreams and had some kids, and I don’t think I’m particularly interested in his photography career, so I’m going to finish the book here on page 259. The first two thirds of the book is excellent though. Incredible stories of his poverty stricken childhood in a Manchester slum followed by his rise to pop stardom with The Hollies in the 1960’s. This is then surpassed with his stories of being part of West Coast American rock aristocracy with Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, with it’s excesses of sex and drugs. He seems to meet half the big names of the 60’s and 70’s on the way and is present at some of the most important cultural events of the era, including the Beatles’ All You Need is Love broadcast and the Woodstock festival. He comes across as a rather grumpy man in places, who’s out to prove that he was more than just the third voice. But at other times he’s incredibly generous, especially to Stephen Stills, and his best buddy Croz. A hugely enjoyable read.
